RAF GAN |
| |
DATES: 1969-1970
LOCATED: In the Maldives, in the Indian Ocean. An island in the Addu Attoll.
MEMORIES:
-
When Paul 'Adge' Cutler arrived at GAN he was as white as a sheet (Moonie). We warned him not to stay in the sun too long. He took no heed and promptly went a walk around the Island. Needless to say he ended up in the Medical Centre, taking a few salt baths.
-
Other memories include the annual cycle race around the Island and the Dhoni (a local boat) race.
-
During Christmas of 1969 I was kicked out of my barracks, together with another 3 guys, so that we could participate in the 'Christmas Bar' competition. Numerous Sections and Units took part. Ours was based on a Western Saloon. Needless to say we won, so being kicked out was worthwhile.
-
At one end of the Island was a skittle alley. Once a week we would get on a bus and go and play skittles. It was a good way of letting our hair down.
-
Being on an Island with no women, excepting one WRVS woman, there was no possibilty to induldge in sex with the opposite sex. A tie was made to symbolise this, the 'Not having Tie', as shown here in the left hand column.
PEOPLE REMEMBERED: Ken 'The Fish' Fisher, Geordie Humble, Flash 'The Spoons' Thompson, Paul 'Adge' Cutler, Bob 'The Mover' White, Sandy 'The Barman'. |
